Twenty People A Minute (2023)
Written by Samantha Robinson
Directed by Tom Mullins
Music Composed by Ian Sutherland
Produced by Tom Mullins and Ian Sutherland for Arthur & Redpath Productions
Co-producing and scoring Samantha Robinson’s strikingly urgent play Twenty People A Minute at the Edinburgh Fringe was an incomparable experience. The text itself is a masterful expression of storytelling about the human experience and is at once intimate and vast. Centred around the themes of displacement and identity, and set in the not-to-distant future, the writing compelled personal reflection on the part of both the audience and the creatives. Creatively helmed by director Tom Mullins, the eventual performances were demonstrative of his skilful understanding of minimalist storytelling in service of placing the human experience at the heart of the piece.
Critical response was undoubtedly enthusiastic and the play was shortlisted for both the ‘Leading Light’ Prize and the ‘Bright Sparks’ Prize, Scottish Theatre Awards On The Fringe 2023.
Carly Fischer, for TheatreTravels:
“Ian Sutherland’s music underscores the show very well.
Generally, I thought it fit beautifully and beyond just its place in the piece, the actual music composed proves Sutherland to be at the top of his game.”
Hugh Simpson, for AllEdinburghTheatre
“Ian Sutherland’s music fits beautifully…
…everything adds up to one of the best things I have seen on the Fringe in years.”
